Anda Filip Became the New Secretary General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union
On July 1, 2026, Anda Filip, a representative of Romania, officially assumed the position of Secretary-General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).
She became the tenth leader, as well as the first woman and the first representative of Eastern Europe in this position, in the 137-year history of the international organization.
The historic election of the new Secretary-General took place in April 2026 during the 152nd IPU Assembly in Istanbul.
Anda Philip will succeed Martin Chungong (Cameroon) as Head of the Secretariat, whose third and final term officially ends today, 30 June 2026, on the anniversary of the IPU's founding, which is celebrated worldwide as International Parliamentary Day.
Anda Filip has held senior positions in the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, including as Ambassador and Permanent Representative to International Organizations in Geneva, as well as Official Representative of the Ministry.
Anda Filip has dedicated over 20 years to working within the structures of the Inter-Parliamentary Union. From 2003 to 2011, she served as the Permanent Observer of the IPU to the United Nations in New York, and since 2011, she has led the Directorate for Member Parliaments and External Relations. With the assumption of office, Anda Filip will take charge of the practical implementation of the IPU's updated Strategy for 2027-2031, which was developed against the backdrop of growing geopolitical tensions and pressure on multilateral diplomacy institutions.
The CSTO Parliamentary Assembly traditionally pays great attention to cooperation with the Interparliamentary Union, sharing common goals of strengthening interparliamentary cooperation, developing an equal dialogue, and consolidating the efforts of lawmakers to ensure sustainable development and global security.
