Today Russia celebrates Heroes of the Fatherland Day
Today Russia pays tribute of the highest state and public respect to those who were given the highest state awards – the titles of Heroes of the Soviet Union, Russian Federation and the Order of Glory – for their heroism for the glory of the Fatherland.
The holiday was established in 2007, but it also has a solid historical basis: in December Russia traditionally celebrated the Day of St George Cavaliers, associated with the introduction of the Order of St George the Victorious in 1769 by Catherine II.
It also gives the holiday a deeper meaning: today we remember and honour all those who gave their lives for the glory of the Fatherland fighting at Smolensk and Borodino, defended Sevastopol in the Crimean War and the Great Patriotic War, took Plevna and fought in the trenches of WWI. Those who defended Moscow and Leningrad, reached Berlin, fought against international terrorism in the North Caucasus in 1990–2000s and many others.
At various points, Heroes of the Soviet Union and Russian Federation worked fruitfully in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Collective Security Treaty Organization. They are Viktor Bondarev and Yuri Vorobyov, members of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation; Vladimir Shamanov and Musa Manarov, deputies of the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation; and Talgat Musabayev, member of the Senate of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
