Meeting on Security Issues in Central Asia held in Jogorku Kenesh
On May 16, the Jogorku Kenesh of the Kyrgyz Republic hosted a meeting on security issues and challenges in Central Asia. Representatives of specialized state bodies, international and regional organizations, as well as scientific and educational institutions attended the meeting.
Ulan Primov, Chairman of the Committee on International Affairs, Defence and Security of the Jogorku Kenesh, presided over the meeting. Delegates of the State Duma of the Russian Federation and the CSTO Parliamentary Assembly, as well as representatives of the parliaments of Belarus and Tajikistan joined the discussion via video call.
The participants of the meeting discussed the harmonization of legislation and strengthening regional cooperation to ensure stability and sustainable development in the region. They paid special attention to the importance of scientific and expert dialog for collective security and development of inter-parliamentary ties.
Ulan Primov pointed out that the exchange of views initiated by the Jogorku Kenesh in April 2024 brought the scientific and lawmaking cooperation within the CSTO PA to a new level, making it possible to achieve significant results. He stressed that the upcoming Council of the Parliamentary Assembly, which will take place in Bishkek on May 19, gives special importance to the current meeting, and the results of the meeting will contribute to the implementation of the priorities of Kyrgyzstan's chairmanship in the CSTO in 2025.
Sergei Pospelov, Executive Secretary of the CSTO PA, made a report on preparing the CSTO PA 2026-2030 Action Plan, model lawmaking and parliamentary monitoring of the military and political situation in the region.
Shabdanbek Alishev, Plenipotentiary Representative of the Jogorku Kenesh to the Inter-Parliamentary Assembly of the CIS and the CSTO PA, reported on the practical results of the participation of the parliamentary and scientific community in the implementation of the priorities of the Kyrgyz Republic's chairmanship in the CSTO, as well as the implementation of large-scale projects to assess the challenges and threats to security in Central Asia.
Heads of leading Kyrgyz universities, who signed cooperation agreements with the CSTO PA Secretariat, and representatives of international organizations working on regional security issues also gave speeches at the meeting.
At the end of the event, the CSTO Parliamentary Assembly Secretariat signed cooperation agreements with higher education institutions of Kyrgyzstan.
As you may recall, on May 27-29, presided by Sergei Shoigu, Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, the 13th International Meeting of High Representatives for Security Issues will take place in Moscow. Invitations to participate in the forum have been sent to more than 150 States of the Global South and East, CIS countries, CSTO, EAEU, SCO, as well as to the heads of more than 20 international organizations
