Day of National Mourning in the Republic of Kazakhstan
By a Decree of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, January 10 is declared the Day of National Mourning in the Republic of Kazakhstan. “In connection with loss of life as a result of the terrorist acts committed in the Republic of Kazakhstan, nationwide mourning is declared on January 10, 2022 in the Republic of Kazakhstan,” reads the decree published on the akorda.kz website.
State flags are at half-mast in Kazakhstan’s cities as the country mourns for victims of terror.
As you may recall, mass protests in the Republic of Kazakhstan began in the first days of 2022 in the cities of Zhanaozen and Aktau, where citizens protested against a two-fold increase in the liquefied natural gas price.
According to TASS, after a few days, the unrest turned into riots, accompanied by attacks on authorities and law enforcement officials, seizure of weapons, pogroms and looting in many cities across the country. Thousands of people have been injured and some have died.
As a result, first in some cities, then throughout the country, a state of emergency was imposed until January 19 and an anti-terrorist operation was declared. The President of the Republic of Kazakhstan personally headed the Kazakhstan’s Security Council and requested assistance from the Collective Security Treaty Organization. A CSTO peacekeeping contingent has already commenced protecting strategic facilities as well as life support systems in Kazakhstan.
