Military aircraft of the South Military District in Armenia conducted training flights at high altitude
On the eve of the Defenders of the Fatherland Day, helicopter pilots of the Erebuni airbase in the Republic of Armenia conducted training flights in high-altitude environment over the Alagyaz training ground.
According to the press service of the Southern Military District of the Russian Ministry of Defence, the crews of reconnaissance attack helicopters Kamov Ka-52 and amphibious transport helicopters Mil Mi-8MTV carried out flights in challenging weather conditions and in the dark. The crews practiced evacuating the simulated wounded and performing search and rescue operations in hover mode. The training tasks were special: young officers in the role of aircraft commanders had to perform independent flights and helicopter landings with one engine turned off.
The ground and engineering staff of the unit gained experience in the organization and maintenance of aircraft.
Upon completion of the training flight programme, the crews will proceed to the exercises of the combat training programme, flights on specified routes and execution of training and combat tasks.
The training flights involved approximately 50 pieces of military equipment of the Southern Military District.
The Russian air base of the South Military District stationed at the Erebuni airfield in Yerevan was formed in 1995. In November 1998, multi-role Mikoyan MiG-29 fighters were redeployed to this base from Russia. At the end of 2013, a helicopter squadron joined the airbase. From December 2015 to February 2016, Mil Mi-24P attack helicopters and Mil Mi-8MT military transport helicopters were redeployed from the Russian Federation. In July 2001, the units stationed in Erebuni formed an airbase that became the air component of the 102nd military base stationed in Gyumri.
