CSTO Joint Staff Marks 20 Years

April 28, 2023 marks the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Collective Security Treaty Organization Joint Staff.

The CSTO Joint Staff plays an important role in the military component of the Organization’s activities, which is capable of responding effectively to contemporary challenges and threats to military security in the Eastern European, Caucasus and Central Asian regions.

The idea of establishing joint collective security system (CSS) governing bodies was formalized in the Memorandum on Enhancing the Effectiveness of the Collective Security Treaty and Its Adaptation to the Current Geopolitical Situation and in the Model of Regional Collective Security System adopted at the Minsk session of the Collective Security Council of the CSTO Member States on May 24, 2000.

In September 2015, the CSTO heads of state unanimously nominated Colonel General Anatoly Sidorov for the post of Chief of the CSTO Joint Staff. He was appointed Chief of Staff by Presidential Decree of November 10, 2015 and assumed his duties on November 23, 2015.
