Representatives of the CSTO States held consultations on the agenda of the 77th session of the UN General Assembly
On September 6 in Moscow, representatives of the Collective Security Treaty Organization Member States held consultations regarding the items on the agenda of the 77th session of the UN General Assembly. According to the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, discussion participants included heads of relevant departments of the MFAs of the CSTO Member States, representatives of the embassies of the Organization’s Member States and deputy Secretary General of the CSTO Samat Ordabaev.
Participants noted the importance of strengthening the central coordinating role of the UN in world affairs, strict compliance with its Charter and other norms of international law.
Discussion involved prospects of leveraging the CSTO potential in UN peacekeeping activities taking into account the existing experience in this area. The importance of the Organization’s effective participation in global peacekeeping efforts was stressed.
Participants reviewed the interaction between the delegations of the CSTO Member States within the UN framework, including the traditional draft biennial resolution on cooperation between the UN and the CSTO, which is due to be adopted during the forthcoming session of the General Assembly.
The consultations confirmed a high degree of convergence in the CSTO Member States’ approaches and their focus on further strengthening interaction at the UN in the spirit of allied relations.
Participants also “synchronized their watches” on the situation in Afghanistan with a focus on the measures needed to eliminate the devastating consequences of the 20-year-long intervention by the USA and its allies.
