Stanislav Zas: We are progressing along the path to being included in the UN peacekeeping activities
“The Council of Heads of the Collective Security Treaty Organization Member States adopted a Declaration expressing concern about the degradation of security mechanisms in the world and the escalation of tensions, including in the Eurasian space.
The document emphasizes that the CSTO will increase its participation in global efforts to ensure peace and security, consistently advocating the settlement of international and regional conflicts through predominantly peaceful political and diplomatic means within the framework of internationally recognized negotiation formats,” said Stanislav Zas, CSTO Secretary General, in his July 1 report on the military and political situation in the CSTO area of responsibility at the CSTO PA Council meeting in Dushanbe.
Stanislav Zas reported on the reinforcement of the Organization’s peacekeeping component under the auspices of the United Nations.
On April 21, by the joint efforts of the CSTO Member States, the 75th session of the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution on cooperation between the UN and CSTO, which has already become traditional and is passed every two years.
According to it, on June 22, during the Moscow meeting with Jean-Pierre Lacroix, UN Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations and Head of the UN Department of Peacekeeping Operations, the parties exchanged their assessments on whether the peacekeeping practices of the CSTO States meet the UN requirements and standards.
This included the creation of a mechanism for the involvement of CSTO peacekeeping forces in the UN peacekeeping.
According to Stanislav Zas, Jean-Pierre Lacroix praised the level of readiness of the CSTO peacekeeping forces, their continuous structural improvement and contingent.
“We are steadily progressing along the path we have outlined for ourselves, that is, being included in the United Nations peacekeeping activities. We have done a lot, but there is still much work ahead,” said Stanislav Zas.
