CSTO Program to Strengthen Tajik-Afghan Border Discussed in Dushanbe
On January 29, Emomali Rahmon, President of the Republic of Tajikistan, received Imangali Tasmagambetov, Secretary General of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), who arrived in Dushanbe on a working visit.
The sides discussed interaction within the CSTO. They also exchanged views on relevant issues of regional and international agenda.
Emomali Rahmon emphasized the importance of timely implementation of the CSTO Targeted Interstate Programme on Strengthening the Tajik-Afghan Border, which was approved by the CSTO Collective Security Council on November 28, 2024, in Astana, expressing confidence that efficient interaction in this area will contribute to ensuring regional security.
During the conversation, attention was also focused on further strengthening of the Organization's comprehensive work to counter risks and threats to security, in particular, terrorism, extremism, manifestations of radicalism, drug trafficking, cybercrimes and organized transnational crime.
In addition, Imangali Tasmagambetov met with Sirojiddin Mukhriddin, Foreign Minister of Tajikistan.
At the meeting, the Tajik Foreign Minister and the CSTO Secretary General pointed out the important coordinating role of the CSTO Foreign Ministries in the implementation of the Targeted Programme on Strengthening the Tajik-Afghan Border.
“The goal of the CSTO is not to fight terrorists, but to ensure security in the area of responsibility,” said the Organization's Secretary General. "The task is to take preventive measures to prevent incidents”.
As you may recall, CSTO parliamentarians and experts are actively working on counter-terrorism issues. Thus, on 26 November 2015, Recommendations on the Approximation and Harmonization of the CSTO Member States’ National Legislation in the Area of Countering Terrorism and Extremism were adopted.
