Elections to the Kurultai Announced in the Republic of Kazakhstan

On July 1, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, signed a decree "On Holding Elections to the Kurultai of the Republic of Kazakhstan." According to the official document published on the President's website, the election will take place on August 23.

This event marks the beginning of a new phase of political modernization in Kazakhstan. Holding elections is the first practical step following the entry into force on July 1, 2026, of the Republic’s new Constitution, which was supported by the country’s citizens in a national referendum on March 15.

As part of a large-scale constitutional reform, Kazakhstan is transitioning to a new model of government and a unicameral parliamentary system. The Kurultai will become the highest representative body exercising legislative power. It will consist of 145 deputies, each serving a five-year term.
