On July 11, on the margins of the 10th BRICS Parliamentary Forum in St. Petersburg, Vyacheslav Volodin, Chairman of the State Duma of the Russian Federation, held talks with Tulia Ackson, President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union and Speaker of the National Assembly of Tanzania.
The parties discussed the development of inter-parliamentary contacts between BRICS and the IPU.
"We see how much the Inter-Parliamentary Union differs from those organizations that were created at the bidding of Washington and Brussels, and it differs in a good way," Vyacheslav Volodin noted.
He stressed the need to address the issues of formation of the legal field, the importance of harmonization of legislation and preparation of model laws.
"If we want to develop relations between our countries, then this is the future of any inter-parliamentary structure, because there are common challenges; and with the formation of common approaches it is possible to deal with them more efficiently," Vyacheslav Volodin said.
Tulia Ackson noted that for more than 100 years, the organization has tried to adhere to the principle of mutual respect and the policy of no double standards.
"It is very important that representatives of the IPU take part in such an event, especially now when the world is steeped in uncertainty. Such formats as the BRICS Parliamentary Forum are a very important platform for discussing issues and problems," Tulia Ackson emphasized.
The IPU is the largest inter-parliamentary association in the world, uniting 180 countries. CSTO parliamentarians regularly hold coordination meetings to develop a common position for work at IPU meetings, and also take part in the annual events of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, the nearest event will be held in October 2024 in Geneva.
