Armenian Parliament elected the President of the Republic
The National Assembly of Armenia announced the results of the second round of secret ballot to elect a new president on March 3. The candidacy of the only contender, Vahagn Khachaturyan, was supported unanimously. 71 deputies from the ruling majority voted for him. This is reported by news.am.
According to the Constitution of the Republic of Armenia, the candidate who gets at least three-fifths of the votes of the total number of deputies in the second round shall be elected President of the Republic. In other words, Vahagn Khachaturyan needed 65 votes to be elected in the second round.
As you may recall, the post of the President of the Republic of Armenia has been vacant since February 1, 2022, when the resignation of the 4th President Armen Sarkissian took effect. Previously, in a statement of January 23, Mr Sarkissian announced his intention to resign because of his inability to influence domestic and foreign policy processes in Armenia.
Armen Sarkissian was elected President by the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia on March 2, 2018 for a seven-year term and was the first head of state to be elected by parliament since the country switched to a parliamentary form of government in 2015.
In accordance with the Constitution of the Republic of Armenia, Alen Simonyan, Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia, serves as the President until the newly-elected President officially assumes office.
Vahagn Khachaturyan was born on April 22, 1959 in Sisian, Armenian SSR.
In 1992–1996, he was the mayor of Yerevan; in 1996–1998, he was an adviser to the President of the Republic of Armenia Levon Ter-Petrosyan. In 2019–2021, served as a board member of Armeconbank. In August 2021, Vahagn Khachaturyan was appointed Minister of High-Tech Industry.
