Today the Republic of Armenia celebrates Independence Day
The Republic of Armenia celebrates its Independence Day on September 21.
On August 23, 1990 the Supreme Council of the Armenian SSR adopted the Declaration of State Sovereignty of Armenia, proclaiming the dissolution of the Armenian SSR and the establishment of the Republic of Armenia.
On this day in 1991, the Republic of Armenia held a referendum, with 99% of participants answering “Yes” to the question of secession from the Soviet Union.
The Armenian SSR has been part of the USSR since 1921.
On September 23, the Supreme Council of the Armenian SSR announced the Republic’s independence. But September 21 was established as the Independence Day.
The election was held as early as in November 1991, and Levon Ter-Petrosyan was elected the first President of the Republic of Armenia. In the same year, the Republic of Armenia joined the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). In 1992, the Republic of Armenia joined the United Nations (UN).
“Armenia is our closest friend and strategic ally,” said Vladimir Putin, President of the Russian Federation, on Tuesday in his congratulations on the approaching Independence Day of the Republic of Armenia at a ceremony of presentation of credentials by foreign ambassadors, including Vagharshak Harutyunyan, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Armenia to the Russian Federation.
“Armenia is our close friend and strategic ally. This year marks two important anniversaries: the 30th anniversary of establishment of diplomatic relations between our countries and the 25th anniversary of the signing of the fundamental Treaty on Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance,” stressed the President of the Russian Federation, recalling that in November Yerevan will host a meeting of the CSTO Collective Security Council. In 2022, the Republic of Armenia is presiding in the CSTO.
This time the country will host no public celebrations on September 21; they are postponed indefinitely.
