On May 1, many countries around the world celebrate International Labour Day, previously known as Day of International Solidarity of Workers. In the CSTO countries this holiday has retained its significance, but in each republic it has its own name and special features.
In Russia and Tajikistan, May 1 is celebrated as Spring and Labour Day, a holiday that signifies both respect for labour and the joy of springtime renewal. In Belarus, Kyrgyzstan and Armenia this day is officially called Labour Day. In Kazakhstan, since 1995 May 1 has become People's Unity Day, symbolizing unity and interethnic harmony.
In many countries, the tradition of gathering under the banners of trade unions and holding demonstrations is still preserved, emphasizing the historical connection of the holiday to the labour movement. In most of the CSTO Member States, May 1 remains a day for celebrating labour, solidarity and social justice.
Therefore, in the CSTO countries May 1 not only symbolizes spring, but marks an important day of support for labour rights, unity and respect for constructive work.
