15 March Is Constitution Day in the Republic of Belarus
Today is Constitution Day in the Republic of Belarus. The Basic Law of the country was adopted on March 15, 1994.
For the first time in the history of Belarusian statehood, the Constitution has enshrined the status of the Republic as a unitary democratic constitutional welfare state and established the priority of human rights and freedoms.
This document has become a solid legal foundation of independence, realizing the aspiration of the Belarusian people to be fully-fledged owners of their native land.
The 1994 Constitution remains in force with the amendments and additions adopted by national referenda on May 14, 1995; November 24, 1996; October 17, 2004; and February 27, 2022.
On March 4, 2022, during a solemn ceremony at the Palace of Independence, Aleksandr Lukashenko, President of the Republic of Belarus, signed the Conclusion of the Republican Referendum on Amendments and Additions to the Constitution of Belarus. “We have created and adopted a unique legal document. It combines traditions and innovations, people’s power and the unity of governance. Without false modesty it can be called the Constitution of the future,” said the President.
Today the Belarusian leader emphasized the particular importance of this holiday in the Year of Peace and Creation. He added that the Constitution reflects the centuries-old aspiration of Belarusians to determine their own way of development and live in an independent state.
