Aleksandr Sukharev, former Prosecutor General of the USSR, passed away at the age of 97 in Moscow, according to the press service of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation.
Aleksandr Sukharev was born on October 11, 1923 in the village of Malaya Treschevka, Voronezh governorate. Former Prosecutor General of the USSR (from May 26, 1988 to October 15, 1990). From March 1984 to February 1988, Minister of Justice of the RSFSR.
Advisor to the Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation. Member of the Office Board of the Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation. Honorary employee of the Prosecutor’s Office of Russia. He fought in the Great Patriotic War, reached the rank of captain by the end of it and was decorated four times.
He was elected deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the RSFSR (1984); was a member of the Public Council under the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation. He also participated in the drafting of the Criminal Procedure Code of the Russian Federation and other fundamental acts in the area of combating crime and protecting the rights of Russians.
For his outstanding achievements in strengthening law and order, on April 30, 2010, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev decreed to award councillor to Prosecutor General Aleksandr Sukharev the highest rank in the procuratorial authorities: Actual State Councillor of Justice of the Russian Federation. In June 2011, he published a book of memoirs Answering the Call of Truth.
A true scholar, a sensitive and kind-hearted man, in his last years Aleksandr Sukharev repeatedly consulted the experts of the CSTO Parliamentary Assembly. His conclusions on the draft model legislative acts of the Assembly were precise, profound and future-proof.
We mourn.
He will be sorely missed.
