Kazakhstan announced early presidential and parliamentary elections
Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, in his address to the people of Kazakhstan on September 1 proposed to hold early election of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan in the autumn of 2022 and early election to the Mazhilis of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan in the first half of 2023.
“I propose to hold an extraordinary presidential election this autumn,” said the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
According to TASS, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev also proposed reducing the presidential mandate to a single term but increasing it from five to seven years.
The President of the Republic of Kazakhstan noted that there would be a political reset of all state bodies of the Republic of Kazakhstan in the middle of 2023. “For me, the interests of the state are paramount, so I am ready to allow early presidential election, even despite the reduction of my own term of office,” he explained.
On March 19, 2019, Kazakhstan’s first president, Nursultan Nazarbayev, resigned as head of state. Next day, the former head of the Senate (upper house of the Parliament) of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev took the oath and assumed the office of president of the country. Kazakhstan held extraordinary presidential election on June 9, 2019, and Mr Tokayev won with 70.96% of votes. The republic held presidential election every five years.
According to the results of January 10, 2021 election to the Mazhilis (the lower chamber of the Parliament), the ruling party Nur Otan (later renamed Amanat) received 71.09% of votes, the People’s Party of Kazakhstan gained 9.10% and Ak Zhol (“Bright Path”) received 10.95%. The election turnout was 63.25%.
International observers from the Parliamentary Assembly of the Collective Security Treaty Organization participated in monitoring of preparation and voting at the election to the Mazhilis of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan on January 10, 2021.
