Vyacheslav Volodin congratulated everyone on Russia Day
On June 12, the Russian Federation celebrates one of its most significant state holidays: Russia Day.
Vyacheslav Volodin, Chairman of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Collective Security Treaty Organization and Chairman of the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, congratulated the Russians on one of the most significant state holidays: Russia Day. “We love our Motherland and take pride in its achievements. Together we build and protect Russia. We strive to make it stronger and more prosperous, to improve people’s lives and welfare,” reads the congratulatory message published on Vyacheslav Volodin’s Telegram channel.
On this day in 1990, the first Congress of People’s Deputies of the RSFSR adopted the Declaration on State Sovereignty of Russia, proclaiming the supremacy of the Russian Constitution and its laws.
The Declaration formalized equal legal opportunities for all citizens, political parties and public organizations; the principle of separation of legislative, executive and judicial powers and the need to significantly expand the rights of autonomous republics, oblasts, okrugs and krais of the RSFSR. A new name of the country, the Russian Federation, a new Constitution and state symbols were adopted.
On June 12, 1991, the country held its first-ever nationwide direct presidential elections, which Boris Yeltsin won.
Under a presidential decree of June 2, 1994 the Day of Declaration of Sovereignty of the Russian Federation was declared a state holiday.
On June 12, 1998, in a televised address to his countrymen Russian President Boris Yeltsin proposed to call the Day of Declaration of Sovereignty of the Russian Federation the Russia Day.
In 2001, speaking at a Kremlin reception marking the Day of Declaration of State Sovereignty, Russian President Vladimir Putin noted that “our new history began with this document. The history of a democratic state based on civil liberties and the rule of law. And its main message is success, prosperity and well-being of citizens.”
