February 2 marks the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Battle of Stalingrad
February 2 is the Day of Military Glory of Russia, the 80th anniversary of the defeat of the Nazi troops in the Battle of Stalingrad. This memorial day is established in accordance with the Federal Law of March 13, 1995 On Days of Military Glory and Remembrance Days in Russia.
“This was one of the bloodiest battles of the Second World War, which claimed the lives of nearly half a million Soviet soldiers and officers. The courage and strength of spirit, the feat of arms of the defenders of Stalingrad who fought up to the last ditch destroyed the plans of Nazi Germany to seize the strategically important bridgehead, turning the tide of war, bringing the Great Victory and the liberation of Europe closer,” recalled Vyacheslav Volodin, Chairman of the State Duma and Chairman of the CSTO PA.
As you may recall, the Battle of Stalingrad began on July 17, 1942, and ended on February 2, 1943. This fierce battle continued for two hundred days and nights on the banks of the Don and the Volga, and then at the walls of Stalingrad and in the city itself.
Vyacheslav Volodin stressed that future generations will never forget those who fought against Nazism and gave their lives for the freedom and independence of their Motherland.
