August 22 Is the Day of the State Flag of the Russian Federation
The Day of the State Flag of the Russian Federation has been celebrated annually since 1994 on August 22.
The flag became a state symbol under Peter the Great. On January 20, 1705, he issued a decree, according to which "all merchant ships" should raise a white, blue and red flag.
Once again the historical three-colored flag rose above Russia in the early 90's. It was installed over the White House in Moscow during the August events of 1991.
In modern Russia, the white color of the flag signifies nobility and purity, blue stands for honesty and loyalty, and red means courage, bravery and blood spilled for the Motherland.
Vyacheslav Volodin, Chairman of the CSTO Parliamentary Assembly and Chairman of the State Duma of the Russian Federation, congratulated Russians on the National Flag Day and noted that the Russian three-colored flag symbolizes the great history of our country, unity and heroism of the multinational people.
“We have chosen the path of sovereign development, and we firmly and consistently defend the state interests and protect traditional values. By overcoming difficulties, we become stronger. The Russian three-colored flag is a sacred symbol, closely tied to the pride we feel for our Motherland. Happy National Flag Day, dear friends!”
