On January 27, 1944 Leningrad was liberated from the Nazi blockade
A flower laying ceremony was held at the Motherland monument at Piskarevskoye Cemetery in St Petersburg on the day Leningrad was fully liberated from the Nazi blockade.
Vladimir Putin, President of the Russian Federation, and Valentina Matvienko, Speaker of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, visited Piskarevskoye Memorial Cemetery today to honour of the victims of the Leningrad blockade, which ended 78 years ago.
The President of the Russian Federation laid a bouquet at the mass grave where his brother, who died as a child during the blockade, was buried. Vladimir Putin also laid a wreath at the foot of the Motherland monument. Representatives of the CSTO PA also took part in the ceremony.
“This is one of the most tragic and heroic pages in the history of our country. The blockade lasted for 872 days. Nearly a million people became its victims, most of them starved. Think about it: that is more than the combined losses of the United States and Great Britain during the Second World War. No other country has suffered the same losses and hardships that our people endured. The war affected everyone,” Vyacheslav Volodin, Chairman of the CSTO PA and Chairman of the Russian State Duma, wrote in his Telegram channel. He recalled that “today, we are witnessing attempts of the West to rewrite history and erase the heroic deeds of our people. It is necessary to remember those who are not with us, to honour and respect the living and to do everything to prevent such a tragedy from happening again.”
On the eve of the Day of the Liberation of Leningrad from the Nazi Blockade, Viktor Rogalev, Plenipotentiary Representative of the Parliament Kazakhstan to the CSTO PA and deputy CSTO PA Executive Secretary, and Igor Musalimov, deputy Secretary General of the IPA CIS Council and Plenipotentiary Representative of the Parliament of Kazakhstan, also laid flowers at the Piskarevsky Memorial, honouring the memory of the Leningraders and Kazakh soldiers who gave their lives while defending the city on the Neva. Flowers were also laid at the foot of monuments to the sniper Aliya Moldagulova and the akyn Zhambyl, author of the poem Leningraders, my children!
