On May 29, Kyrgyzstan celebrates Armed Forces Day.
The history of the holiday dates back to May 29, 1992, when all military units, institutions and formations of the former Soviet Union, stationed on the country’s territory, were placed under the national jurisdiction of the Kyrgyz Republic.
Today, the Kyrgyz army serves not only as a guarantor of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the state, but also as a key element of the collective security system within the framework of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO).
The Kyrgyz Republic actively participates in joint activities of the defence ministries of the CSTO Member States. The country’s military contingents regularly take part in large-scale command-and-staff exercises, demonstrating a high level of combat readiness and coordination.
Particular attention is paid to the development of the Collective Rapid Reaction Forces (CRRF) and the Organization’s peacekeeping capabilities.
"The participation of Kyrgyz servicemen in the CSTO joint structures makes a significant practical contribution to maintaining regional stability, countering international terrorism, extremism and other modern challenges and threats in Central Asia and across the Eurasian space," noted Sergei Pospelov, Executive Secretary of the CSTO Parliamentary Assembly.
