August 31 is the Independence Day of Kyrgyzstan. On this day in 1991, an extraordinary session of the Supreme Soviet of the Kyrgyz SSR (Jogorku Kenesh) adopted the Declaration of State Independence of the Republic of Kyrgyzstan.
The country’s Independence Day is being celebrated for the first time in the southern capital. It was timed to coincide with the 80th anniversary of Nasirdin Isanov, the first Prime Minister, who was born in the Osh region.
Sadyr Japarov, the Republic’s President, raised the national flag on a 57-metre flagpole.
“I congratulate everyone on Independence Day. For generations, freedom and independence have been passed over to us. Our ancestors fought to preserve the state, sometimes shedding blood. Let our banner, which is also red in colour, remind us of our origins and how we achieved this independence,” said Kyrgyz leader Sadyr Japarov.
A large concert will be held in the main square in Osh, and the final of national kok-boru teams, as well as horse races and other types of national games will be held at the hippodrome.
