May 5 is Constitution Day in the Kyrgyz Republic. The country's Basic Law in its current edition was adopted in 1993. Over the years of independence, the Constitution of Kyrgyzstan has been changed 12 times. The last referendum on the new edition was held on April 11, 2021.
The first Constitution of the Kyrgyz Republic dates back to 1929.
For Kyrgyzstan, as for many other states, the Constitution is the basic law. It establishes the basic rights and freedoms of citizens, defines the legal status of the state and has the highest legal force.
Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov Congratulated the Kyrgyz People on the 30th anniversary of the Adoption of the Constitution
“The main task of the country today is to consistently strengthen the universally recognized democratic beliefs, guarantees of human rights and freedoms. Every Kyrgyzstani must understand well the spirit and meaning of our Constitution. Only by respecting the Basic Law, observing its rules, and understanding its value and essence will we honour the country and the values of the Kyrgyz people, and only then will we be able to achieve national development, social unity, peace and tranquillity,” Mr Japarov stated.
He noted that “the creative potential of the Constitution is unlimited,” and will be revealed as the necessary socio-economic, socio-political and other conditions are met.
