Aleksandr Lukashenko and Imangali Tasmagambetov discuss prospects of CSTO development
Imangali Tasmagambetov, Secretary General of the Collective Security Treaty Organization, met with Aleksander Lukashenko, President of the Republic of Belarus, in Minsk, to emphasize the importance of cooperation between the Organization and the UN.
“Our goal is to provide foreign policy support of the Organization’s capabilities and its efforts to ensure regional security. At the 77th session of the UN General Assembly, CSTO potential was very much appreciated with the adoption of a relevant resolution on cooperation between the UN and CSTO,” said Imangali Tasmagambetov.
The CSTO Secretary General informed Aleksandr Lukashenko, Chairman of the Collective Security Council, about the steps that are being taken to include the collective peacekeeping forces of the CSTO in the UN peacekeeping operations.
According to Mr Tasmagambetov, it is necessary to effectively position the CSTO “on the external periphery.”
Besides, the CSTO Secretary General said that the CSTO would continue to cooperate with large regional and international organizations: the UN, SCO, CIS and OSCE.
Aleksandr Lukashenko, in turn, emphasized that all CSTO Members need to unite and act together because “it is always easier and simpler this way.”
As you may recall, the meeting between Imangali Tasmagambetov and Aleksandr Lukashenko was held as part of the first working visit of the newly appointed CSTO Secretary General to Minsk on February 13.
