Internationalist Soldier Remembrance Day is marked today in the CSTO member states
The Collective Security Treaty Organization Member States traditionally commemorate the Internationalist Soldier Remembrance Day on February 15.
As you may recall, on February 15, 1989 the last Soviet soldier crossed the bridge over the river Amu Darya near Termez, which marked the end of the withdrawal of the Soviet troops from Afghanistan. Nearly 15 thousand Soviet soldiers died in Afghanistan, another six thousand died from wounds and diseases.
In the course of the long history of our once-united country, the soldiers had to enter the territories of various countries. Such operations differed in purpose and scale, but fighters always confidently carried out their tasks.
The names of many internationalist soldiers who performed their duty far from home, at the order of their Homeland, are still not made public, and many of them, who defended the interests of the state in different parts of the world, lie in a foreign ground. Today we remember them.
In the Republic of Belarus, the Day of the Internationalist Soldier has an official status established by the President of the Republic of Belarus.
In Russia, the Day is also called Remembrance Day of the Russians Who Performed Their Duty Outside the Fatherland.
The date was established by the law On Amendments to Article 1.1 of the Federal Law On Days of Military Glory and Remembrance Dates of Russia (signed by Dmitry Medvedev, President of the Russian Federation, on November 29, 2010).
Until 2011, February 15 was celebrated as the Memorial Day for Internationalist Soldiers, but it did not have any official status. This day unites soldiers who fought in Afghanistan and participants of three dozen armed conflicts that occurred after the end of the Great Patriotic War, as well as those who provided international support in Korea, Vietnam, Angola, Syria and other lands and countries.
Today, fresh flowers are laid at the memorials and monuments to internationalist soldiers in many states of the former Soviet Union. Those who are alive remember those who have gone.
