Electoral sovereignty is a priority for CSTO parliamentarians
The Information Centre of the Russian CEC hosted a discussion of topical voting issues during the presidential election of the Russian Federation, in particular, of the problems of electoral sovereignty.
Opening the session, CEC member Igor Borisov noted: "No one had any doubts that before the elections there would be increased attempts to question the legitimacy of our electoral process, to intensify attacks on new subjects, to maximally distort and slander the voting procedure and the result of the people's will. We have prepared for this; we have come a long way. We remain faithful to democratic principles".
Vasily Piskarev, deputy of the State Duma, Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Security and Corruption Control, Chairman of the State Duma Commission on Investigation of Foreign State Interference in the Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation, noted that numerous attempts of foreign agents to influence public opinion by spreading dirty disinformation, provocative methodological materials, propaganda and many other things have been recorded in the country.
Sergei Pospelov, Executive Secretary of the CSTO PA, presented the legislative experience of the Parliamentary Assembly in ensuring information security and electoral sovereignty. He pointed out that on December 5, 2022 the Assembly adopted Recommendations on Improving Legislation to Ensure Protection of Electoral Processes and Sovereignty in the CSTO Member States.
"As a follow-up to the work in this area, today the working bodies of the Assembly are studying the issue of developing Recommendations on Ensuring the Security of the Organization and Holding Elections and Referendums in the CSTO Member States in High-Risk and Emergency Situations, as well as Recommendations on Countering Destructive Information Influence on the Internal Affairs and Electoral Sovereignty of the CSTO Member States," Sergei Pospelov said.
Parliamentarians and experts agreed that electoral sovereignty as a set of measures to ensure the fundamental principles of the electoral process plays a crucial role in strengthening the entire state sovereignty.
