CSTO leaders resolved to develop measures to respond to threats emanating from Afghanistan
The extraordinary session of the CSTO Collective Security Council held remotely on September 23 has discussed the Afghanistan situation and its impact on the security of the CSTO Member States.
TASS reports that the participants decided to design a set of measures to respond to threats emanating from Afghanistan by the next meeting of the CSTO Collective Security Council.
At the meeting participants mentioned the need to take measures to enhance the security of the Organization’s States, especially in Central Asia, said Stanislav Zas, CSTO Secretary General.
The leaders of the CSTO Member States are deeply concerned about the dangerous trend of IS (Islamic State, an organization recognized as terrorist and banned in the Russian Federation) maintaining its strong position in Afghanistan.
Vladimir Putin, President of the Russian Federation, believes it is important to prevent the spread of radical Islamism from Afghanistan into the territory of CSTO Member States and the recruitment of citizens, including through social media and the Internet.
“The problem of Afghanistan-based drug trafficking is still extremely acute, so the CSTO also has to monitor very closely how events will unfold in this regard,” Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov told journalists. In addition, he noted that CSTO heads of state understand that the UN, UN Security Council and G20 need to coordinate their efforts with regard to the Afghanistan situation.
It has been decided to hold the next session of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) Collective Security Council in Dushanbe, the capital of the Republic of Tajikistan, on September 16.
According to the kremlin.ru website, the meeting, chaired by Emomali Rakhmon, President of the Republic of Tajikistan, was attended by Nikol Pashinyan, Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia; Aleksandr Lukashenko, President of the Republic of Belarus; Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Sadyr Zhaparov, President of the Republic of Kyrgyzstan; Vladimir Putin, President of the Russian Federation; Shavkat Mirziyoyev, President of the Republic of Uzbekistan; and Stanislav Zas, CSTO Secretary General.
