Markevich: We Are Impressed by Citizens’ Interest in Political Participation in Kazakhstan
Aleksandr Markevich, coordinator of the election observation mission to Kazakhstan from the Parliamentary Assembly of the Collective Security Treaty Organization, shared the results of his meeting with the CEC leadership and his impressions on the election campaign in general.
“Much work has been done to ensure that political parties in Kazakhstan are actively involved in the election process. A hybrid system is utilized in the election process. When we were told how many candidates were registered in the majoritarian districts, we were impressed by the interest that citizens were showing in the political life of Kazakhstan,” said Mr Markevich.
The head of international observers emphasised that Kazakhstan’s experience will be analysed and used for the forthcoming single voting day in Belarus, where members of the lower chamber of parliament and local councils will be elected.
As you may recall, the CSTO PA international observers base their work on the principles of the Convention on Standards of Democratic Election, Voting Rights and Freedoms in the Member States of the Commonwealth of Independent States (Chisinau Convention): the principles of political neutrality, objectivity, non-interference in the election process and compliance with the election legislation of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
