A meeting between Russian and Tajik Foreign Ministers Sergei LAVROV and Sirodjidin MUKHRIDDIN was held in Moscow.
“During the meeting with my Tajik counterpart, much attention was paid to the situation in Afghanistan and we expressed concern about the presence of foreign terrorist fighters in the northern Afghan provinces, virtually on the border with Tajikistan and our other Central Asian partners,” Sergei LAVROV said at a joint press conference after the negotiations, as reported by Sputnik Tajikistan.
According to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, the meeting confirmed “the commitment to assist the peace process in this long-suffering country, including using the Moscow format, using the capabilities of the CSTO and the SCO-Afghanistan Contact Group.”
“The arrangements regarding military and military-technical cooperation, including further modernization of the Tajik armed forces, will continue to be fully implemented,” the Russian Foreign Minister said. “The Russian Federation will continue to provide Central Asian countries with the necessary assistance in combating terrorism, extremism and drug trafficking. We agree that the 201st Military Base of the Russian Federation in Tajikistan remains a significant factor of stability and security in the Central Asian region.” Another important topic of the meeting was preparations for the celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War.
