Nigmatulin: peacekeeping function is important for the CSTO
In his speech via videoconferencing at a field session of the Council of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Collective Security Treaty Organization, Nurlan Nigmatulin, Chairman of the Mazhilis of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan, noted that despite the challenging conditions due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Collective Security Treaty Organization continued its fruitful work in 2020, and heads of states adopted a sizeable set of documents aimed at further progressive development of the Organization.
“Kazakhstan is committed to further strengthening and expansion of international cooperation and to the resolution of urgent issues, both regional and global,” Mr Nigmatulin noted.
“At present the situation with regional and global security is aggravated, and not only because traditional challenges and threats to security, such as terrorism and extremism, become more prominent, but also because of the emergence of new factors of influence on geopolitics and geoeconomics that are connected with development of information and communication technologies, connected with phenomenal hybrids and cyberwarfare,” continued Nurlan Nigmatulin.
He thanked the CSTO Member States for supporting the proposal of Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev to establish a special peacekeeping representative of the CSTO Secretary General. “There is no doubt that this initiative, when implemented, will broaden interaction opportunities between the CSTO and the relevant structures and interaction with the Secretariat of the United Nations, allowing to reach a qualitatively new level,” he stated.
