The CSTO Joint Staff celebrates its 18th anniversary
Eighteen years ago, on April 28, 2003, heads of Member States of the Collective Security Treaty Organization decided to establish a permanent working body, the CSTO Joint Staff, that would be responsible for the military component of the Organization.
According to the press service of the Collective Security Treaty Organization, the Joint Staff is tasked with the formation, functioning and deployment of Troops (Collective Forces); preparation and conduct of joint operational and combat training together with defence departments of the CSTO Member States; military and technical cooperation, coordination of joint training of personnel and experts for the armed forces of the CSTO Member States, as well as management of the Crisis Response Centre.
Speaking about the 18th anniversary, Colonel General Anatoly Sidorov, Chief of the CSTO Joint Staff, noted that the respect earned by the multinational personnel of the CSTO Joint Staff throughout its existence allows us today to take an active part in the building of the military component of the system of collective security of the Organization, in ensuring a peaceful future, integrity and consistent development of our states.
During these years, the CSTO Joint Staff focused on organizing the implementation of the decisions of the heads of the CSTO Member States and defence departments, developing the military component and crisis response mechanisms, as well as improving the CSTO regulatory framework, taking into account the priority areas proposed by the States for the duration of their presidency in the Organization.
One of last year’s main results was the CSTO Joint Staff’s completion of the drafting of the 2021–2025 Plan for the Development of Military Cooperation between the CSTO Member States, which was approved in 2020 during the December session of the CSTO Collective Security Council.
Development of the components of the CSTO Troops (Collective Forces) jointly with the CSTO Secretariat and defence departments focused on improving the makeup, training and equipment of the CSTO Peacekeeping Force contingents.
To involve the CSTO peacekeeping capacity in international peacekeeping activities under the auspices of the United Nations, a special medical unit of the Burdenko Main Military Clinical Hospital was incorporated into the CSTO peacekeeping forces.
It was decided to create a combined medical unit of the CSTO States: a medical support (special purpose) detachment.
At the initiative of the CSTO Joint Staff, Recommendations on Improving the Legislation of the CSTO Member States in the Field of Organizing International Flights of the Armed Forces, Other Troops and Military Formations were developed and adopted by the CSTO Parliamentary Assembly in 2020
