Since January 1 Kyrgyzstan Began its CSTO Presidency
The chairmanship of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) passed to the Kyrgyz Republic since January 1, 2025.
In 2024, the Organization was chaired by the Republic of Kazakhstan.
Speaking at the session of the CSTO Collective Security Council in Astana on November 28, Sadyr Japarov, President of Kyrgyzstan, noted that particular attention would be paid to continuing dialogue with international organizations and third countries in areas of mutual interest to strengthen the CSTO's role in maintaining peace and security. Kyrgyzstan will work on deepening cooperation with the specialized structures of the CIS and SCO in the fight against international terrorism, he said. In addition, the CSTO will continue working on promoting a positive image of the Organization in the media sphere.
In addition, Sadyr Japarov voiced the priority areas that the CSTO will focus on this year. The priorities include developing foreign policy ties, expanding military cooperation, taking active measures to combat modern challenges and threats, as well as upscaling inter-parliamentary cooperation in the areas mentioned above.
In addition, in 2025, Kyrgyzstan intends to initiate an international conference on cyber security. During this event, participants will be able to discuss relevant issues of information security and exchange views on combating cybercrime.
On December 9, at a meeting of the CSTO Parliamentary Assembly in Moscow, Nurlanbek Shakiev, Chairman of the Jogorku Kenesh of the Kyrgyz Republic, announced the parliamentarians' plans for the year of chairmanship.
“We intend to pay particular attention to expanding the CSTO's capabilities in ensuring regional security. Therefore, about twenty events are planned in Kyrgyzstan, including summits, visiting sessions, joint meetings, military exercises”, said Nurlanbek Shakiev.
As you may recall, the CSTO comprises six states – Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia and Tajikistan. The Collective Security Council (CSC) is the highest body of the Organization. Since January 2023, Imangali Tasmagambetov has been the CSTO Secretary General.
