June 30 is the International Day of Parliamentarism.
This holiday was established by the UN General Assembly to commemorate the first international conference of the Inter-Parliamentary Union held on this day in 1889. This oldest and most venerable organization of parliaments of different states still exists today.
The idea of establishing an International Day of Parliamentarism was first voiced in the Tauride Palace, the cradle of Russian parliamentarism. The First, Second, Third and Fourth State Dumas of the Russian Empire worked there until 1917. Today, the Tauride Palace serves as Headquarters of the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly. Valentina Matvienko, Chairwoman of the IPA CIS Council, Chairwoman of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, presented this initiative at the IPA CIS plenary session. The idea received enthusiastic support, and in October 2017, when a session of the Inter-Parliamentary Union was held in the Tauride Palace, it was also supported by this organization, which in turn addressed the UN General Assembly.
The CSTO Parliamentary Assembly is an observer at the Inter-Parliamentary Union, and the deputies working in the CSTO PA also take part in the IPU sessions.
The Day of Russian Parliamentarism is celebrated each year on April 27.
