Planned for adoption this year, the CSTO Targeted Interstate Programme on Strengthening the Tajik-Afghan Border is an example of continuous work on the development and implementation of particular measures on strengthening the security space on the territory of the Organization's Member States. This was stated by Imangali Tasmagambetov, CSTO Secretary General, in an interview with the social and political publisher “Soyuzniki.ODKB” (Allies.CSTO).
“The issues of global transformation are thoroughly studied both in the CSTO working bodies and in the relevant agencies of the Member States. I can state a common understanding that it is futile to seek peace and stability alone. Our states generally share the approach implying the need to expand cooperation within the Organization and with other friendly countries and structures, especially since the CSTO has a wide range of approaches and tools to protect collective interests,” Imangali Tasmagambetov said.
According to him, the CSTO is characterized by open and honest discussions of all relevant issues within a constructive and “soft” alliance and by decision-making that is strictly in line with the principle of consensus.
The decision to strengthen the border between Tajikistan and Afghanistan was supported by all CSTO states. The program includes three stages and is designed for five years. At the first stage, it is planned to clarify the details. On the one hand, the Tajik side is to submit suggestions to strengthen certain parts of the border. On the other hand, the Member States should determine physical and other resources that can be allocated to protect Tajikistan's state border. This stage is expected to take about a year. Within a five-year period, it will be followed by the second and third stages offering the implementation of particular measures to develop this border.
