Belarusian CEC Took into Account CSTO PA Suggestions on Electoral Sovereignty
The observer mission from the CSTO Parliamentary Assembly headed by Victoria Abramchenko, Deputy Chairman of the State Duma of the Russian Federation, took part in the informational briefing by Igor Karpenko, Chairman of the Central Election Commission of the Republic of Belarus.
The head of the Belarusian CEC said that the territorial and precinct election commissions are working normally and are ready for the principal voting day.
Igor Karpenko also pointed out the improvements in the electoral legislation.
“First, we have legalized the notion of electoral sovereignty. This notion is included in the Concept of National Security of the Republic, which was approved by the All-Belarusian People's Assembly. What have we adopted in this area? A number of legal positions have been added to the Election Code; the requirements for candidates have been strengthened; we have tested interaction algorithms with law enforcement agencies,” said the head of the Belarusian CEC.
As you may recall, the term “electoral sovereignty” was suggested by the CSTO Parliamentary Assembly and was later included in the Belarusian Concept of National Security.
On December 5, 2022, the Assembly adopted Recommendations on Improving Legislation to Ensure Protection of Electoral Processes and Sovereignty in the CSTO Member States.
