A European Parliament Resolution Took into Account Provisions of CSTO PA Recommendations
On July 13, the European Parliament adopted a resolution prepared by the Special Committee on foreign interference in all democratic processes, including disinformation, that is aimed at countering foreign interference in the European Parliament’s own work on countering foreign interference in elections.
The document emphasizes that “attempted interference is a widespread phenomenon that must be countered as vigorously as possible”, including at the level of national governments.
The report gives an extensive list of deterrent mechanisms for foreign interference in political processes, introduces a new notion of “security culture,” which should be “strengthened within the European Parliament in order to counter foreign interference more effectively,” and outlines the need to “implement effective monitoring and surveillance systems to detect foreign interference.”
Thus, the EU is preventively preparing a system of defence against “weapons” that it itself has been using for the past years.
As you may recall, on December 5, 2022, the CSTO Parliamentary Assembly adopted Recommendations on Improving Legislation to Ensure Protection of Electoral Processes and Sovereignty in the CSTO Member States.
These Recommendations were developed with a view to coordinating the efforts of the CSTO Member States to protect electoral processes and electoral sovereignty and the right to participate in referendums free from foreign interference in elections and referendums, to provide effective responses to new challenges to democracy and universally recognized processes for the realization of citizens' electoral rights, as well as to coordinate the cooperation of the CSTO Member States in this area.
