Volodin proposed to develop model acts providing for increased liability for the rehabilitation of Nazism and defamation of veterans
“The formation of a single legal framework in our countries will contribute to the harmonization of approaches to the protection of historical memory,” said Vyacheslav Volodin, Chairman of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Collective Security Treaty Organization and Chairman of the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, at a field meeting of the Council of the CSTO Parliamentary Assembly.
“It would be right to develop model regulations providing for increased liability for equating the role of the USSR to that of Germany in the Second World War, rehabilitation of Nazism, slander against veterans of the Great Patriotic War or humiliation of their honour and dignity. Insulting those who stood up to defend their Motherland is unacceptable. Our countries need to do everything possible to keep the truth about the victory of the Soviet multinational people,” the CSTO PA Chairman stressed.
As you may recall, on March 17, 2021 the Russian State Duma adopted a set of laws amending the Criminal Code and the Code of Administrative Offences, providing for increased liability for the rehabilitation of Nazism online, public dissemination of false information about the veterans and disparagement of their honour and dignity.
Such violations would impose a maximum fine of up to RUB 5 million or five years of imprisonment.
On June 9 the Russian State Duma passed a law prohibiting to equate the role of the USSR with that of Germany in the Second World War. The law also prohibits denying the “decisive role of the Soviet people in the defeat of Nazi Germany or the humanitarian mission of the USSR in the liberation of the countries of Europe.”
