On September 21, the Republic of Armenia celebrates the 29th anniversary of its independence.
On that day in 1991, a referendum was held in the then Armenian SSR, where the overwhelming majority of participants, namely 99%, supported the establishment of independent statehood.
Nearly 95% of citizens having the right to vote took part in the referendum. Two days later, on September 23, 1991, the Supreme Soviet of Armenia confirmed its withdrawal from the USSR.
In 1991, the Republic of Armenia joined the Commonwealth of Independent States. In 1992, Armenia joined the UN.
On May 15, 1992, the Republic of Armenia, together with a number of CIS States, became an active participant in the Collective Security Treaty.
Since 2002, the Republic of Armenia has actively participated in the work of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO). The National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia plays an important role in the CSTO Parliamentary Assembly.
The Republic of Armenia gained independence at a difficult time: the open wound of Spitak (only three years had passed since the earthquake), the armed conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh, economic problems: put together, this could threaten the republic’s survival. However, the Armenian people has honourably passed through all the trials.
According to Sputnik Armenia, in the years of independence, the Armenian people managed to do a lot: create and strengthen an army that is rightly considered one of the most efficient in the region; improve state institutions; implement reforms in many key areas.
Undoubtedly, there are also tasks that are being addressed: primarily overcoming poverty, developing a powerful economy and resolving a demographic crisis.
Unfortunately, this year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, colourful public events and festivities traditionally held in the country on Independence Day will not take place. The celebration will be held online, but this will not lessen its significance.
