Today Russia celebrates the Day of the Unknown Soldier
Today Russia celebrates the Day of the Unknown Soldier.
This is a day of remembrance of all unknown soldiers who have fallen on the battlefields, both in Russia and abroad.
The memorable date was established in 2014.
In December 1966, on the 25th anniversary of the defeat of Hitler’s troops near Moscow, the ashes of the Unknown Soldier were transferred to the Alexander Garden from the 41st kilometre of the Leningrad Highway, where bloody battles were fought that stopped Hitler’s advance to the Soviet capital.
On May 8, 1967, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier memorial was unveiled. The eternal light was lit there by the flame blazing on the Field of Mars in Leningrad.
“Your name is unknown, your feat is immortal,” says the granite tombstone slab. To the right, along the Kremlin Wall, there are urns where the sacred land of the Hero Cities is stored.
The Day of the Unknown Soldier is not only a tribute to the memory of those killed on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War; it is also a date that unites all those killed and MIA in wars and military conflicts.
This is a tribute to all those who died on the fronts, to the memory of everyone who defended our Motherland and whose graves their descendants cannot visit.
But they are all alive in the memory of people, and this memory must be preserved and passed on from generation to generation.
We live as long as we remember.
