March 3 is National Flag Day of the Kyrgyz Republic
Today the Kyrgyz Republic celebrates National Flag Day (Кыргызстандын мамлекеттик туусунун күнү). The holiday was established by Presidential Decree No. 270 of June 10, 2009 On State Flag of the Kyrgyz Republic.
“I congratulate everyone on the day of adoption of our state flag that proudly flies against the background of the mountains as a sign of victory, success and patriotism!” Sadyr Japarov, President of the Republic, congratulated all Kyrgyz citizens.
The date of the celebration was not chosen randomly: on March 3, 1992 the state flag was approved by the Supreme Soviet of the Kyrgyz Republic. The first flag of independent Kyrgyzstan was hoisted on March 5, 1992 over the Government House in Bishkek.
The flag elements symbolize the following:
The colour red symbolizes victory, heroism and courage;
The red tunduk of the Kyrgyz yurt symbolizes unity, friendship and homeland;
40 diverging golden rays symbolize the unification of forty tribes of the Kyrgyz people under one tunduk;
