August 30 Is Constitution Day of the Republic of Kazakhstan
Today Kazakhstan celebrates Constitution Day, which according to the Law on Holidays in the Republic of Kazakhstan has the status of a public holiday among other major celebrations.
This year the Constitution of Kazakhstan is 28 years old. The Basic Law was adopted by the people at a referendum on August 30, 1995. This day celebrates the right of the country’s citizens to live in a democratic welfare state governed by the principles of the rule of law.
On June 5, 2022, a referendum was held at which all citizens of the Republic voted in favour of adopting amendments to the Constitution. These amendments expanded the rights of citizens to participate in the governance of the country and strengthened the protection of civil rights, the role of Parliament, and made the transition from a super-presidential model of government to a presidential republic.
Constitution Day is celebrated across the country. Festivals, thematic exhibitions and concerts are held, and it has become a good tradition to open new social facilities on this day. The festive day ends with a fireworks display in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan.
Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, President of Kazakhstan, traditionally congratulated Kazakhstanis on Constitution Day. The message of the Head of State was published by his press service in Telegram.
“Updated as a result of the national referendum, the Constitution has become a potent symbol of consolidation of our nation. It serves as a reliable foundation for the ongoing large-scale reforms aimed at democratization of the political system, ensuring the rule of law, progressive improvement of people's welfare. One of such institutional reforms was the establishment of the Constitutional Court, which has significantly strengthened the role of the Basic Law as a guarantor of the protection of civil rights and freedoms,” the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan wrote.
