The 58th session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union of Belarus and Russia was held as a video conference
On July 7, the deputies of the Union State met remotely to review the implementation of the 2019–2020 Union State Action Plan dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Belarus from the Nazi invaders and the 75th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War.
According to the website of the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, Vyacheslav Volodin, Chairman of the CSTO PA and Chairman of the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, reminded in his speech that the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin and the President of the Republic of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko unveiled the Rzhev Memorial of the Soviet Soldier on June 30th.
“This is a people’s monument. Citizens of Russia, Belarus and other CIS countries made personal donations for its construction,” he said, noting that about RUB 400 million had been raised to build the monument.
According to Vyacheslav Volodin, a similar project of the Union State is being implemented in Belarus: the restoration of the memorial site Brest Hero Fortress.
“Today, when the world is at war with monuments and historical memory is being erased, our countries are doing their best to protect the truth about the Victory of the Soviet people in the Great Patriotic War,” Mr Volodin said.
According to the website of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union of the Republic of Belarus and the Russian Federation, a document was approved by the decree of the Supreme State Council of the Union State in July 2019 that includes the events commemorating the end of the Great Patriotic War.
These events include: creation of the Rzhev Memorial of the Soviet Soldier in Tver oblast; complete renovation, restoration and preservation of Brest Fortress structures within the Brest Hero Fortress memorial site; holding of the Academic Olympics for school students of the Union State called Russia and Belarus: Historical and Spiritual Community and the festival Youth for the Union State. The plan provides for other events in the areas of youth policy, patriotic education, preservation of cultural heritage, education and outreach, and social support for war veterans.
Having reviewed the results of the implementation of the 2019–2020 Union State Action Plan dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Belarus from the Nazi invaders and the 75th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War, deputies decided to continue making efforts towards immortalizing the heroism of the Soviet people during the Great Patriotic War, countering falsification of history and preserving historical memory, providing patriotic education to young people and care for veterans. There will also be increased efforts to establish a permanent and equal dialogue with parliamentarians from other states to ensure peace for present and future generations.
The next session of the Parliamentary Assembly will be held in the Russian Federation. The date and place will be determined by the Council of the Parliamentary Assembly.
Let us recall that the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union of Belarus and Russia is an observer in the CSTO Parliamentary Assembly.
