September 9 is the Independence Day of the Republic of Tajikistan
On August 24, 1990 the Supreme Soviet of the Tajik SSR adopted the Declaration of Sovereignty of the Tajik SSR at its second session.
On September 9, 1991, after the attempt of the State Committee on the State Emergency, the Resolution and Statement On the State Independence of the Republic of Tajikistan were adopted at the session of the Shuroi Oli (Supreme Council) of the Republic of Tajikistan.
According to Sputnik Tajikistan, on this day the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, the Founder of Peace and National Unity, Leader of the Nation Emomali Rahmon accepts congratulations from heads of states and awards honorary medals and titles to people from different spheres of life.
“Please accept sincere congratulations on the occasion of the national holiday, the Independence Day of the Republic of Tajikistan. Your country has achieved considerable success in economic and social spheres and plays a constructive role in regional and international affairs,” reads the congratulatory telegram of the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin addressed to the President of the Republic of Tajikistan.
According to khovar.tj news portal, the message notes that relations between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Tajikistan “are developing dynamically in the spirit of alliance and strategic partnership. Bilateral cooperation continues to expand in various fields, and the same is true of cooperation within the CIS, the CSTO, the SCO and other international associations.”
On the eve of Independence Day, the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, the Leader of the Nation Emomali Rahmon delivered an address in which he spoke about the achievements of independent Tajikistan.
He spoke in detail about the hard days of the state-building, when as a result of an “imposed civil war,” “lawlessness and chaos reigned in the country, the state authorities were paralyzed, more than 1 million of our compatriots became forced refugees and within a short time span, tens of thousands of our innocent citizens died, including women, children and the elderly.” Emomali Rahmon noted that even in these conditions healthy forces of society managed to rise to the task and put an end to the fratricidal war, and the forced refugees returned to their homeland.
The President of the Republic of Tajikistan also noted that over 29 years, the country’s economy has grown, industrial facilities have been launched, international highways and new hydroelectric power plants have been built.
Today the global community recognizes Tajikistan as a state based on the “open door” policy, the address reads.
Emomali Rahmon reminded that it is important to instil in the modern youth the love to the homeland and loyalty to the state, and once again thanked all citizens of Tajikistan, “be they old or young,” for their work.
September 9 is a state holiday in Tajikistan. Various public and political events are held all over the country.
