CSTO PA representatives took part in a mourning ceremony at Piskarevskoye Memorial Cemetery on the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Siege of Leningrad
Representatives of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Collective Security Treaty Organization took part in a mourning ceremony on the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Siege of Leningrad. Together with a delegation from the Inter-Parliamentary Assembly of the CIS Member States, representatives of the CSTO Parliamentary Assembly laid flowers and wreaths at the Motherland monument at Piskarevskoye Memorial Cemetery. Flowers were also laid to the memorial stones commemorating the soldiers from the former Soviet Union republics who died defending Leningrad.
On September 8, 1941 the enemy siege closed in around the city. The siege lasted almost 900 days. According to various estimates, from 641 thousand to one million people were killed by hunger, cold, artillery shelling and bombardments of the city.
Piskarevskoye Memorial Cemetery is the largest mass grave in the world. According to official data alone, it rests over four hundred thousand citizens and soldiers who died defending the city.
