Anatoly Sidorov: CSTO and UN develop a registration mechanism for peacekeeping contingents
The Secretariat of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) together with the Joint Staff and the UN Department of Peace Operations will develop a registration mechanism for multinational peacekeeping contingents based in a coordinating state. Colonel General Anatoly Sidorov, Chief of the CSTO Joint Staff, told this to TASS at the opening of the CSTO peacekeeping exercise Unbreakable Brotherhood 2021 in the Republic of Tatarstan.
“At present, the CSTO Secretariat, together with the Joint Staff and the UN Department of Peace Operations, is developing a registration mechanism for multinational peacekeeping contingents based on a coordinating state. In other words, issues of practical participation of the CSTO Collective Peacekeeping Forces in peacekeeping operations under the UN mandate are being resolved,” he said.
Anatoly Sidorov noted that in 2021 the CSTO amended its documents, providing for the formation of “combined peacekeeping contingents” for their subsequent deployment to one of the UN peacekeeping missions.
Joint exercise with the Collective Security Treaty Organization’s Collective Peacekeeping Forces Unbreakable Brotherhood 2021 began on November 8 at the firing range of the Kazan Higher Tank Command School. Participants include military contingents from the Republic of Armenia, the Republic of Belarus, the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, the Russian Federation and the Republic of Tajikistan.
A total of approximately 1,800 people representing the armed forces and law enforcement agencies of the CSTO Member States are taking part in the exercise that involves about 300 units of equipment, including Mil Mi-8 and Mi-24 helicopters.
As you may recall, within the framework of the 2021–2025 CSTO PA Action Plan on Approximation and Harmonization of National Legislation of the CSTO Member States, the CSTO Parliamentary Assembly has developed the model law On Peacekeeping Activities and Peacekeeping Forces.
