Jogorku Kenesh Deputies Announce Voluntary Dissolution of Parliament
On September 25, deputies of the 7th convocation of the Jogorku Kenesh of the Kyrgyz Republic voted to dissolve the parliament.
84 of 89 deputies present voted in favor of adopting the corresponding resolution. No one voted against it.
Nurlanbek Shakiev, Chairman of the Jogorku Kenesh, addressed the nation, noting the historical significance of this decision. He emphasized that this is the first time in the history of independent Kyrgyzstan that the parliament had voted to dissolve itself.
"I’d like to stress that this decision was made solely by the parliament. No external forces interfered in it – neither the President nor the Cabinet of Ministers," Nurlanbek Shakiev said.
The Chairman expressed his gratitude to the deputies who put the interests of the state and the people first.
"If we had thought about our personal interests, we could have opted for working for another year. However, the deputies put the interests of the state above their own and came to this decision," Nurlanbek Shakiev stated.
He pointed out that the deputies of the 7th convocation will retain the authority until the deputies of the new convocation assume their posts.
Ulan Primov, Chairman of the Committee on International Affairs, Defence, Security and Migration of the Jogorku Kenesh, explained that in Kyrgyzstan, the election of deputies to the Jogorku Kenesh takes place every five years. According to Primov, in order to avoid political turbulence, elections to the parliament must be held earlier.
The parliamentarian pointed out that according to the Election Law, 30 multi-member constituencies will be created. Three deputies will be elected in each of them.
