Emomali Rahmon: Tajikistan is concerned about climate change
In his speech at the 6th Summit of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA), Emomali Rahmon, President of the Republic of Tajikistan, recalled the global initiatives of the Republic of Tajikistan in combating modern threats and dangers and recalled that in several days Dushanbe, together with the UN and other international partners, will hold a high-level conference within the Dushanbe Process on combating terrorism, which will cover important global issues.
In addition, Emomali Rahmon highlighted the concern over climate change. “Tajikistan is concerned about changes in the water cycle causing strong floods and droughts, adversely affecting water and energy resources and food security,” Khovar.tj agency quotes the President of the Republic of Tajikistan. “As a result of climate change and global warming, out of 14,000 glaciers in the mountains of Tajikistan, more than 1,000 have completely melted.”
Emomali Rahmon emphasized the need for CICA member states’ leaders to address existing problems in a timely manner and mentioned Tajikistan’s initiatives to solve the global problem of a lack of drinking water.
In this context, Emomali Rahmon urged heads of states and international organizations to strengthen cooperation in combating the effects of climate change.
“To attract more attention of the world community to solving water and climate problems and melting glaciers, we have proposed to declare the year 2025 the International Year of Glacier Protection.
We hope that our efforts in this area will be fully supported by the CICA member states,” said Emomali Rahmon.
