CSTO States will participate in exercise Vostok 2022 in Russia
According to the website of the Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation, the Vostok 2022 strategic command and staff exercise will take place on September 1–7, 2022 under the leadership of the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation. The exercise will include practicing defensive and offensive actions at seven training ranges of the Eastern Military District: Burduny, Goryachiye Klyuchi, Knyaze-Volkonsky, Lagunnoye, Sergeevsky, Telemba and Uspenovsky, as well as in the Sea of Okhotsk and the Sea of Japan and their coastal areas.
The objectives of the exercise are to improve the skills of commanders and staffs in managing mixed-service and coalition groups of troops (forces) when repelling aggression in the eastern direction and in the Far Eastern Maritime Zone, increasing the compatibility and level of interaction when the coalition groups of troops solve joint tasks of peacekeeping, protecting interests and ensuring military security in the Eastern Region.
The exercise will also test the level of preparedness of the military command and control authorities to organize planning of operations in coastal areas and provide comprehensive support and management of troop (force) groups during the conduct of combat operations.
Joint operations will be carried out as part of coalition groups of troops by operational command teams, military contingents and observers from the countries of the Collective Security Treaty Organization, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and other partner states, including Republic of Azerbaijan, People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria, Republic of Armenia, Republic of Belarus, Republic of India, Republic of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, People’s Democratic Republic of China, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Mongolia, Republic of Nicaragua, Syrian Arab Republic and Republic of Tajikistan.
From the armed forces of the Russian Federation, the military administrative bodies and troops of the Eastern Military District, part of the Airborne Forces, long-range and military transport aviation forces will take part in the exercise.
Its tactical episodes are based on various scenarios of joint actions by military contingents of the armed forces of the Russian Federation and partner states, with the main one planned to take place at the Sergeevsky training range.
In addition, the Pacific Fleet and the naval forces of the People’s Republic of China will jointly practice defending maritime communications and maritime economic activity areas and providing assistance to ground troops in the coastal area in the Sea of Japan.
The actions of the troops (forces) involved in the exercise will be carried out in accordance with the provisions of the 1996 Agreement between Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and China on Confidence Building in the Military Field in the Border Area.
In total, more than 50,000 servicemen, more than 5,000 pieces of armaments and military equipment, including 140 aircraft, 60 warships, boats and support vessels, will be involved in the Vostok 2022 exercise.
