Mir Rahman Rahmani calls for assistance in Afghanistan’s fight against terrorism
Mir Rahman Rahmani, Speaker of the Afghan Parliament, speaking at the Council, expressed his conviction that the CSTO must play an important and constructive role in strengthening relations among Member States in combating threats of international terrorism, security and social crises.
“Building the capacity of the CSTO Parliamentary Assembly holds great geostrategic and economic promise to ensure the future of Central Asian countries, especially Afghanistan,” he said.
Mr Rahmani urged the CSTO Parliamentary Assembly to cooperate in the spirit of neighbourliness to save the people of Afghanistan by supporting it with the supply of vaccines and medical equipment, among others.
Speaking about the terrorist threat, he noted that the people and government of Afghanistan are fighting international terrorism and domestic extremist groups alone.
“After the signing of the peace treaty with the Taliban and the withdrawal of foreign troops, which should be completed by September 11 this year, all security functions will be transferred to the Afghan government forces.
On behalf of the Afghan government and parliament, I call on the members of the CSTO Parliamentary Assembly to cooperate fully in this fight so that Afghanistan’s armed forces – the defenders of freedom and democracy – can defeat international terrorism and save the region from the potential threat,” said Mir Rahman Rahmani.
He concluded by expressing his belief that strengthening inter-parliamentary cooperation and establishing closer relations to jointly identify security threats to CSTO Member States will help respond to emerging dangers, including terrorism and extremism, in a timely manner.
“I send you a message of friendship and peace from the government, people and parliament of Afghanistan. I hope that based on the results of our dialogue, we will solve existing problems and lay the foundation for further cooperation,” Mr Rahmani said in conclusion of his speech.
